Flying Around the World

(Amelia's Journey)
2003-10-01
Doug Schenker
On July 2, 1937 promoter George Putnam is attempting to get actors, dancers and singers ready for a July 4th extravaganza in California to welcome his wife Amelia Earhart on her round the world flight. The song is performed in an over the top manner with flags flying, jugglers, batons twirling, dancers flipping and general mayhem. When the song is over word comes over the radio that Amelia's plane is missing after flying more than 22,000 miles. Everyone leaves the stage except reporter Mike Harris. He tells the story of Amelia and George from when they met in 1928.
"FLYING AROUND THE WORLD"

California to Miami the first leg of the trip
Across the Caribbean she took a southern dip
Landed in Brazil at a place that's called Natal
Then o`er the South Atlantic to Dakar in Senegal

CHORUS:
Flying around the world (She's really flying)
Her legend will endure (There's no denying)
Amelia's fame's assured
(It's not surprising)
‘cause she's flying around the world

From Dakar on the west coast she flew on to Khartoum. Karachi to Calcutta and then on to Rangoon.
Left Lae Papua and is Howland Island bound
Then off to Hawaii and California's Oakland town.

CHORUS: (repeat)

From North to South America the continental hop
Africa to Asia, still she cannot stop
Australia and the islands she has gone so far
Soon she’ll be back home with more luster on her star.

CHORUS: (repeat)
